On New Year’s Day1994, the EZLN (Zapatista National Liberation Army)in armed rebellion seized several towns in the Mexican state of Chiapas as a response to the implementation of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) which was viewed as a “death sentence.” Since then, these indigenous peoples have held the territories as autonomous zones inspiring millions worldwide and launched the anti-globalization movement against neoliberal policies.
