What is Running Down The Walls?
Running Down the Walls is a non-competitive run/walk/roll 5K event where people inside and outside of prisons run/walk/roll in solidarity with prisoners everywhere. It is both a fundraiser and a protest against mass incarceration. This event brings us closer together, strengthens our bond, and lets people behind bars know they are not forgotten.
History
Since 1999, prisoners and supporters throughout Turtle Island, and recently in the UK, have participated in the annual Running Down the Walls event. It is the primary fundraiser for the Anarchist Black Cross Federation (ABCF) Warchest, a fund designed to assist political prisoners. Funds raised are typically split between the ABCF Warchest and a recipient chosen by the local hosts. Each year, incarcerated comrades participate by running, walking, or otherwise exercising at the same time as us –from behind bars.
Join Us
On Sunday, September 15th, many places will be hosting RDTW. Join us in Eugene at the Owen Rose Garden (300 N Jefferson Street) near the river (follow the signs). We’ll begin with a brief welcome and solidarity statements at 1:00 pm. Around 1:45 pm, those who want to participate in the 5k will proceed northwest along the Willamette River path for 1.55 miles and back for a total of 3.1 miles.
Running is not required! You can also walk, bike, roll, cheer, or just hang out. Afterwards, stay for socializing with speakers, tabling, and light refreshments.
Political prisoners and freedom fighters are subjected to abominable conditions. Let’s celebrate the recent releases of Veronza Bowers and Eric King and drum up support for those still inside and those facing charges as we build momentum for the struggles ahead!
Proceeds
There is a $10 suggested donation but please donate more if you can. You can bring cash the day-of or donate via Venmo: @NACEUGENE. Please put RDTW in the comment.
Proceeds raised from the 2024 Eugene Running Down the Walls event will be split between the ABCF Warchest, which provides financial support to political prisoners, and the local A15 defendants who are facing charges for Palestine solidarity.
Register
Registration is not required. But it will help us with planning so please do register if you can.
